It was a big year for SA hip hop music and there were a lot of great albums released. Here are our picks for the best SA hip hop albums of 2015.

Nasty C – Bad Hair

Nasty C’s debut album “Bad Hair” is easily one of the best hip hop albums to come out of South Africa. The production is top notch, the lyrics are clever and Nasty C proves that he is a force to be reckoned with in the South African hip hop scene.

AKA – Levels

AKA’s Levels was one of the most highly anticipated hip hop albums of 2015. It debuted at number one on the iTunes South Africa Hip Hop charts and went on to be nominated for a South African Music Award for Best Rap Album. The album features some of AKA’s biggest hits including “Jealousy”, “All Eyes On Me”, and “Run Jozi (Godly)”.

Cassper Nyovest – Tsholofelo

Cassper Nyovest’s debut album, Tsholofelo, was one of the most game-changing albums in South African hip hop. It was released in 2014 and went on to sell over 200,000 copies, making Nyovest the first South African hip hop artist to go platinum with an album. The album featured a number of hit singles, including “Doc Shebeleza” and “Gusheshe”, which both went on to become classics in the South African hip hop canon.

K.O may have taken his time but he finally dropped his debut album Skhanda Republic at the end of October and boy, was it worth the wait. The 11-track project is a solid body of work that documents K.O’s journey in the music industry, as well as touches on social issues such as crime and religion. With features from the likes of Nandi Mngoma, AKA and Ma-E, Skhanda Republic is one of the best hip hop albums to come out of South Africa in recent years.

Riky Rick – Family Values

Riky Rick’s “Family Values” is one of the freshest, most innovative hip hop mixtapes to come out of South Africa in a long time. The beats are unique and original, and Riky Rick’s flow is effortless and smoother than silk. This mixtape is sure to get your head nodding and your feet tapping.

If you’re a fan of SA hip hop, or if you’re just looking for something new and different, “Family Values” is definitely worth a listen.

Anatii – ArtiiFact

Anatii’s mixtape, ArtiiFact, is one of the best Hip Hop releases of 2015. The mixtape features a number of guest appearances, including AKA, Cassper Nyovest, and Kwesta. The production on the mixtape is top-notch, and Anatii’s lyrical prowess is on full display throughout the project.

AKA – All Eyes on Me

AKA’s “All Eyes on Me” is a song about the South African rapper’s massive success and how he intends to keep his head down and keep working hard. The track, which features a guest verse from AKA’s good friend Anatii, is taken from AKA’s 2015 album Levels.

Cassper Nyovest – Gusheshe

Gusheshe is a song by Cassper Nyovest, a South African hip hop artist. The song was released as a single on October 6, 2015, and is the lead single from Nyovest’s second studio album, Tsholofelo (2014).

Gusheshe is a trap song with lyrics that celebrate Nyovest’s wealth and success. The song’s title is a slang term for a BMW 325i, and the song’s music video features Nyovest driving and rapping in front of several luxury cars.

“Gusheshe” was critically acclaimed by music critics, who praised its catchy hook and Nyovest’s confident delivery. The song was a commercial success, peaking at number one on South Africa’s iTunes chart and number two on the country’s official singles chart.
