“Savior, Redeemer of My Soul” is a song by Vocal Point. The song was released on their album, The Perfect Album.

The song is about the Savior’s love for us and His atonement. It is a beautiful and moving testimony of the power of the Savior’s love in our lives.

About the Song

“Savior, Redeemer of My Soul” is a popular Christian song written by Bernie Herms and Mark Hall. The song was first recorded by the Christian group Vocal Point and has been covered by many other artists since then. The song is about the saving power of Jesus Christ and is a declaration of faith.

History

History
The hymn “Savior, Redeemer of My Soul” was written by Moroni Olsen and Mahonri M. Young, grandnephew of Brigham Young.

The music was composed by Evan Stephens and first published in the 1899 edition of the Latter-day Saint hymnal.

In an article published in the Church’s Ensign magazine in April 1982, Olsen recounted his feelings as he wrote the text of the hymn:

“As I wrote, a great spirit of love for my Savior welled up within me. I wept as I realized anew the magnitude of His Atonement for each one of us. The more I contemplated His suffering for me and for all mankind, the more my heart was filled with love for Him.”

Olsen also recounted that as he wrote the final stanza, he had “a very unusual experience.” He said, “I felt as if two hands had been laid upon my head, one from behind and one from above. These hands then seemed to infuse into my mind certain thoughts which I expressed in that final stanza.”

Meaning

Some have interpreted the phrase “savior, redeemer of my soul” in this song to mean that Jesus is our savior from sin and the redeemer of our souls from death. This is a valid interpretation, but it is not the only way to understand these phrases.

The word “savior” can also refer to someone who rescues us from danger or distress. This is the way the word is used in the Bible when it refers to Jesus (e.g., Acts 13:23; Philippians 3:20). In this sense, Jesus is our savior from all kinds of troubles and dangers, both now and in eternity.

Similarly, the word “redeemer” can refer to someone who pays a ransom to free someone from captivity or slavery. This is also the way the word is used in the Bible when it refers to Jesus (e.g., Isaiah 43:1; Galatians 3:13). In this sense, Jesus redeems us from sin and death by paying the price for our redemption with his own blood (1 Peter 1:18-19).

So, whether we understand “savior, redeemer of my soul” to refer primarily to salvation from sin or salvation from all kinds of troubles and danger, we can be sure that Jesus is our savior and redeemer in both senses of these words.
