When Christine’s engagement to Raoul is announced at a gala celebration honoring her late father’s career as an artist, Erik breaks into mad laughter and causes a chandelier to crash down on the guests below; several people are killed or injured. In the ensuing chaos, Erik disappears with Christine into the bowels of the opera house. Raoul follows them there but gets lost; meanwhile, Christine finds Erik’s hidden room where he has kept pictures of her as well as mementos from her father. She tearfully begs him to let her go but he refuses; instead he shows her two graves digged side by side – one for her father whom he had loved dearly – telling her that they will be together forever just like them…
