Smile Empty Soul is a rock band from Santa Clarita, California, United States. The band was formed in 1998 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Sean Danielson, bassist Chuck Panozzo and drummer John Bivens. Smile Empty Soul’s name originates from a Jack Kerouac quote: “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved…”

The band released their self-titled debut album in 2003 which contained the hit single “Bottom of a Bottle”. The album was certified gold by the RIAA. The band’s second album, Annexation of Puerto Rico (2005), debuted at number 34 on the Billboard 200 and was followed by their third album, chemical-free (2007), which debuted at number 19.

In 2010, the band released their fourth album, We’re All Damaged. The first single from the album, “After Life”, peaked at number 17 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Smile Empty Soul went on hiatus in 2012, but announced their return in 2016 with the release of their fifth album Poisoned by the World.

The second single “Bottom of a Bottle” became their most successful single, peaking at number 5 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The song “Afterlife” was included in the soundtrack for the film The Punisher (2004).

The band’s second album, Anxiety, was released on August 8, 2006. It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and spawned three singles: “The Semi-Waldorf”, “Silhouettes”, and “Find Yourself”. In 2007, Smile Empty Soul went on tour with Seether, Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace.

The band’s third album, Self-Help Serenade, was released on September 9, 2008. The lead single from the album was ” False Alarm “. Self-Help Serenade debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200 selling 11,000 copies in its first week.

In 2010 Smile Empty Soul released their fourth album titled Vader . Vader featured a heavier sound then past albums with songs like “Jaded (These Years)” & “Don’t Ever Believe”. After touring in support of Vader Smile Empty Soul started working on what would become their fifth studio album,. On March 26th 2012 Smile Empty Soul independently released their fifth studio album titled 3’s . 3’s featured songs such as ” bottom of a bottle “, which was re recorded from their self titled debut , as well as 2 new singles ,”nowhere kids” & Afterlife “. Currently Smile Empty Soul is working on new material for a future release.
