A Folk Music Playlist

Music has the ability to transport us to another time and place. It can tell the stories of our ancestors and remind us of our own experiences. Folk music is a genre of music that is passed down from generation to generation. It is the music of the people and usually tells the story of their culture and traditions. In this playlist, we will take a journey through some of the most popular folk songs from around the world.

The Stray Birds are an American folk band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, consisting of Oliver Craven, Maya de Vitry and Charlie Muise. Formed in 2010, the band has released three studio albums, the most recent of which, Let It Pass, came out in 2016. “The Cuckoo” is a traditional song that the band has performed live many times; a recording of their performance at the Exalted Lemon in Baltimore was included on a 2014 split EP with fellow folk singer Dori Freeman.

“Wild Mountain Thyme” is a traditional ballad from the Scottish Highlands. It’s about a young man who is in love with a girl who lives in the mountains. The song has been covered by many artists, but The Wailin’ Jennys’ version is my favorite. Their harmonies are beautiful, and it’s a great example of folk music.
