Why are they worth your time?

Soul Coughing is an American alternative rock band that was active from 1992 to 2000. The band’s unique sound was a mix of singer/songwriter M. Doughty’s beat poetry-influenced lyrics, jazz-influenced horn and percussion arrangements, and bassist/producer Mark de Gli Antoni’s loop and sample-based production.

The band found success with their 1994 debut album Ruby Vroom, which peaked at #24 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned the minor hit single “Super Bon Bon”. Their 1996 follow-up album Irresistible Bliss also did well, reaching #17 on the Billboard 200 and spawning the radio hit “Circles”. After touring extensively in support of their albums, Soul Coughing broke up in 2000 due to creative differences.

Despite their relatively short time together, Soul Coughing made a significant impact on the music world, helping to pioneer the alt-rock/hip-hop hybrid sound that would come to be known as “trip-hop”. If you’re a fan of alternative rock or trip-hop, then Soul Coughing is definitely an artist worth checking out.
