The song was originally released in 1968, but it wasn’t until 2014 that a YouTube video of Gaye’s live performance of the song at the Apollo Theater went viral, spreading the soul singer’s unique brand of music to a new generation of fans. Otis Redding- “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”

This Otis Redding ballad has become one of the most covered songs in history, and there are many great versions out there. This year, we saw two new versions that really stood out. The first is by British soul singer Sam Smith, who included the song on his debut album “In the Lonely Hour.” The second is by Ledisi, who released a live version of the song as part of her “The Truth” album. Sam Cooke- “A Change Is Gonna Come”

This Sam Cooke song was released in December 1964, just months after the singer’s death. The song became an anthem for the civil rights movement and is considered one of the greatest soul songs of all time.

Stevie Wonder- “Living for the City”

There are few people in the world who haven’t been touched by the music of Stevie Wonder. The legendary artist has been making hits for decades, and his influence can be heard in the work of contemporary artists across genres. “Living for the City” is one of Wonder’s best-known tracks, and its message of social justice and equality is as relevant today as it was when it was first released. The song’s iconic opening monologue, delivered by Wonder himself, sets the scene for the rest of the track: “City life/ It can really get you down.” From there, Wonder paints a vivid picture of urban life, with all its highs and lows. The track peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

The Temptations- “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” was released in 1974 and is from the album ‘345’. The song was written by Motown’s Norman Whitfield and Eddie Holland.

The Supremes- “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”

The Supremes- “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” is a song by The Supremes, released as the lead single from their album The Supremes Sing Holland–Dozier–Holland. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in early October 1966, becoming The Supremes’ eighth number-one hit in two years. It topped the rival Cash Box chart for one week. Internationally, it was also a success, reaching number one in Australia and New Zealand, and number six in the United Kingdom. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song as number 135 on their list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.

Wilson Pickett- “In the Midnight Hour”

This performance of “In the Midnight Hour” was captured at the American Folk Blues Festival in 1966. The song was originally recorded by Wilson Pickett in 1965 and released on his album The Wicked Pickett.

The Staple Singers- “Respect Yourself”

The Staple Singers were an American family group from Chicago who began their career in the gospel world, but found great popularity crossing over into the realm of soul and rhythm and blues with hits like “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There.” The group was founded in 1948 by Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and lead vocals, and his children Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis Staples on backing vocals. Yvonne Staples also joined the group later on. They reached the height of their popularity in the 1970s with a string of hits that included “Respect Yourself,” “I’ll Take You There,” and “Let’s Do It Again.” The group continued to tour and record into the 21st century, even after the death of Pops Staples in 2000.
