Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, disc jockey, activist, and actress. Dubbed the “First Lady of Neo-Soul”, she is known for her role in the rise of the neo-soul sub-genre. Her work includes elements of R&B, jazz, soul, and hip hop.

Badu’s critical and commercial breakthrough came with her debut album, Baduizm (1997). Released by Kedar Entertainment, Inc., it spawned three number-one R&B singles: “On & On”, “Appletree”, and “Otherside of the Game”. The album was certified quadruple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).Her first live album, Live (1997), was certified double Platinum and was recorded at The Masonic Temple Theater in Detroit on May 16, 1997.

Badu’s second studio album, Mama’s Gun (2000), was released on D’Angelo’s label Vaughan Sound in October 2000 to critical acclaim. Its lead single “Bag Lady” became one of her signature songs after its Top 10 R&B/Hip-Hop and Top 20 pop performance. The album was certified double Platinum by the RIAA. In 1997, after releasing her debut album Baduizm to critical acclaim, Erykah Badu became a part of history as one of neo soul’s leading ladies alongside Lauryn Hill and Mary J. Blige who were also redefining R&B at the time.
