The Newport Jazz Festival is one of the most well-known and respected jazz festivals in the world. It takes place every summer in Newport, Rhode Island and features some of the biggest names in jazz. If you’re a fan of jazz, this is one festival you don’t want to miss.

The Newport Jazz Festival is an American jazz music festival held every summer in Newport, Rhode Island. The festival was founded in 1954 by socialite Elaine Lorillard and her husband, Louis Lorillard, with producer George Wein. It was originally called the “Newport Jazz Festival”, but the name was shortened to “Newport Jazz Festival” in 1960. Wein has been credited with co-founding much of early jazz festival infrastructure; he is also credited with naming the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The three-day event features multiple stages of live music performing a wide range of jazz styles, including traditional jazz, swing, bebop, hard bop, post-bop, soul jazz, avant-garde jazz, and fusion. From its inception to 2010 it was held at Fort Adams State Park; since then it has been held (since 2011) at nearby Aquidneck Island’s Fort Adams’ neighboring park, the International Tennis Hall of Fame grounds (which were converted into a temporary concert venue for the event). Among frequent performers chosen for the honor of opening the festival were such artists as Miles Davis (1959), Ernestine Anderson (1972), Bent Fabricius-Bjerre (1977), Dizzy Gillespie (1979), Tony Bennett & Count Basie Orchestra (1980), Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass (1981 ), Sarah Vaughan (1982 ), B.B. King & Etta James (1983 ), Lionel Hampton & Illinois Jacquet (1984 ), Miles Davis Quintet + Gil Evans Orchestra featuring Quincy Jones conducting(1985 ).
