Lang Lang

Lang Lang (born 17 June 1982) is a Chinese concert pianist who has performed with leading orchestras in China, the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. He is one of the highest-paid classical musicians in the world. His technique and use of color and shade have drawn comparisons to Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Claudio Arrau, and Glenn Gould.

Lang Lang was born in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. His father is Lang Guoren ( simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Láng Guǒrèn), his mother is Yue Yinping (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Yuè Yǐnpíng). Guoren and Yinping met as students at the Peking Conservatory of Music; they later taught at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. Lang’s father came from a family of Korean descent who settled in Northeast China during the 1920s – his ancestors were from Andong Province in what is today South Korea.

Lang began playing piano at age two and by age five he had already won several competitions. At age nine he was accepted into Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts where he studied until 2001 under Zhao Pingguo; other teachers included Zhu Ya-Fen and Moissaye Boguslawski. At thirteen he gave his first public recital outside China in Singapore. In 1997 he participated in Associated Board examinations organized by The Royal Schools of Music in London; he became the first person from outside Europe or North America to achieve the top mark of “distinction” in all grades of piano examinations up to Grade 8.

Yiruma

Yiruma is a South Korean composer and pianist. His real name is Lee Ru-ma. He was born in 1978 in Seoul, and began learning classical piano at the age of five. After moving to England at the age of eleven to study, he later attended Kings College London, where he majored in composition. Yiruma released his first album, “Love Scene,” in 2001. Since then he has gone on to release eight additional albums, as well as various compilations and single tracks.
