Since its inception, the show has been held annually, with the exception of 1990 and 1993. It was not held in 2002 due to budget issues at BET, but returned in 2003. After a four-year hiatus due to differences between BET and Don Cornelius Productions (the production company for Soul Train), the awards returned in 2009 on Centric (then BET’s sister network). The show was once again put on hiatus after just two years; no official reason was given for this decision. After a five-year break, Soul Train returned on BET’s main network in 2015.
