Reggae Music

Origins

Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, “Do the Reggay” was the first popular song to use the word “reggae,” effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican danceable music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady. Ska is a fast, rhythmic music with a strong offbeat played on guitars and percussion instruments. Reggae is characterized by a 4/4 time signature with an emphasis on bass and drums played on the offbeat.

Reggae developed from African American R&B, jazz, mento (a Jamaican folk music), calypso, and indigenous Jamaican folk music. Reggae’s direct predecessors included rocksteady, ska, and mento; however, reggae has far outstripped those genres commercially. One of the earliest instances of reggae reinterpretation occurred in 1966 when The Melodians’ version of “The Rivers of Babylon” incorporating Rastafarian lyrics became an international hit.

Reggae music has been around for decades and has been gaining in popularity in recent years. There are many famous reggae artists, both old and new, who have helped to make this genre of music what it is today. Some of the most popular reggae artists include Bob Marley, Buju Banton, and Sean Paul. These artists have all helped to bring reggae music to the mainstream and have made it one of the most popular genres of music in the world.
