History of Spanish Hip Hop

Spanish hip hop is a subgenre of hip hop music characterized by rapping in the Spanish language. It developed in Spain in the mid-1980s, slightly later than other Spanish-language Hip hop scenes such as in South America, when the first Illegal MC started to rap together in gatherings and parties, and spread to Latin American countries such as Venezuela and Mexico.

The first recordings of hip hop music in Spain were made sometime between 1986 and 1987 by rappers hailing from different autonomous communities, including Madrid (e.g. Drexler, Gambino), Valencia (D Lucus), Andalusia (SMASH Brothas), Valencia / Murcia (Bap) or Catalonia (Kase-O). However, it was not until 1993 when funk band Orishas released their first album A lo cubano that Spanish hip hop began to gain mainstream popularity both within Spain and worldwide. The album went platinum in France and received critical acclaim from music critics. It helped to establish a local scene and bring attention to Spanish rappers such as Porta, shredder Shotta, El Buho and Rapsusklei among many others.

In 2012,Spanish rock band Mana released their eleventh studio album Drama y Luz which featured several tracks with heavy hip hop influences. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart in the United States, making it the first time a rock en español band had reached the top spot on that particular chart.
