We hope you’ll join us on this journey!

Introduction

Spirit Junction is a unique musical experience that blends traditional Korean folk music with jazz. The result is a sound that is both familiar and new, providing a refreshing take on two classic genres.

The project was conceived by Korean-born pianist and composer Jaeho Hwang, who has been living in the United States for the past decade. Hwang was exposed to both Korean folk music and jazz early in life, and he has always been drawn to the similarities between the two genres. Both styles place a heavy emphasis on improvisation, and both are known for their soulful expression of emotion.

Hwang assembled a group of talented musicians from both Korea and the United States to help him bring his vision to life. The result is an album that is as tuneful as it is moving, with each track exploring the intersection of Korean folk music and jazz in a different way.

Whether you’re a fan of folk music, jazz, or both, you’re sure to find something to enjoy on Spirit Junction.

The Birth of Spirit Junction

Spirit Junction was born out of a passion for two completely different genres of music: Korean folk music and jazz.

For the past few years, bandleader and composer Jongkwon Ko has been exploring the possibilities of combining these two genres, and the results are truly unique. Drawing on his experience as a jazz pianist, Ko has created a sound that is at once familiar and new, blending the best of both worlds.

The name “Spirit Junction” refers to the meeting point of these two musical traditions, and it is also a reflection of Ko’s own journey as a musician. Born in South Korea, Ko began his musical education with traditional Korean music, but he later discovered his love for jazz while studying in the United States. Now, with Spirit Junction, he is able to bring his two passions together and create something truly special.

The Influence of Spirit Junction

Since its inception, Spirit Junction has been a place where Korean folk music and jazz intersect. The music of Spirit Junction is informed by both traditions, but it also creates something new and exciting.

The problem with most jazz-Korean fusion is that it often feels forced, like two cultures are being shoehorned together without any real understanding or respect for either. But the music of Spirit Junction is different. The band members have a deep understanding of both Korean folk music and jazz, and they use that knowledge to create something new and fascinating.

The result is a sound that is at once familiar and exotic, comfortable and challenging. It’s the perfect place to explore the best of both worlds, and to discover something totally new in the process.
