The city has a number of great clubs and venues that cater to this rapidly growing community, and there are always new events and parties popping up. If you’re looking to get into the electronic music scene in St. Louis, here are some great places to start.

The electronic music scene in St. Louis is changing.

In the past few years, the electronic music scene in St. Louis has grown tremendously. There are now more venues, festivals, and clubs that cater to this genre of music. The music scene has also become more creative and diverse. This is due to the influx of new artists and producers who are bringing their own unique sound to the city.

The music is getting more experimental.

In the past five years or so, the St. Louis music scene has undergone a seismic shift. It’s not just that clubs have come and gone, or that bookings have become more sporadic; it’s that the very nature of electronic music in the city has changed. Whereas before there were just a handful of DJs playing mostly commercial house music to an audience of club kids, now there are dozens of artists making and playing all sorts of experimental music to a much wider range of people.

This is partly due to the efforts of two men: Aaron Auchterlonie, who co-founded the label NDYD Records in 2013, and Andrei Thomas-Tikhonenko, who moved to St. Louis from Russia in 2014 and founded the record label and party series Onyx Ashanti Experience (OAE). These two labels have been at the forefront of releasing and promoting experimental electronic music in St. Louis, and their work has helped to foster a community of like-minded artists and listeners.

Auchterlonie says that when he started NDYD Records, he wanted to create a platform for “weird” music that wasn’t necessarily being championed by other local labels. “There was this idea that if you were making weird or difficult music, you had to go elsewhere,” he says. “But I thought, ‘Why can’t we have that here?’ So we started putting out releases by local artists who were doing really interesting things.”

One such artist is Thomas-Tikhonenko himself, whose 2014 album Воздух (translated as “Air”) is a beautiful and kaleidoscopic work of ambient techno. Tikhonenko says that when he moved to St. Louis, he was surprised by how open people were to his type of music. “I didn’t expect there would be such an audience for it,” he says. “But I’ve found that people here are really receptive to new ideas and new ways of hearing things.”

Tikhonenko’s OAE label has released records by other local artists like Noah Sterlin (whose 2016 album Dream House is a masterful blend of techno, IDM, and ambient music) and Ricky Rules (whose 2017 album Technicolor Dreams is a playful yet contemplative work of electroacoustic noise). But OAE is more than just a record label; it’s also a party series that brings together local DJs, live performers, visual artists, and dancers for monthly events at different venues around town.

The crowds are getting more diverse.

In recent years, the electronic music scene in St. Louis has been growing and evolving rapidly. The crowds at shows have become more diverse, and the music itself has become more experimental and avant-garde.

One of the most notable changes has been the increase in gender diversity. In the past, the electronic music scene was overwhelmingly male-dominated. However, nowadays it’s not uncommon to see female DJs and producers headline shows.

This increased diversity has led to a wider range of sounds and styles being represented in the city’s electronic music scene. From hard-hitting techno to ethereal ambient soundscapes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

If you’re looking to get into the electronic music scene in St. Louis, there are plenty of great shows to check out. No matter what your taste in music is, you’re sure to find something that appeals to you.
