What is EDM?

EDM is short for Electronic Dance Music. It is a type of music that is typically made with electronic equipment. This equipment can include turntables, mixers, and synthesizers. EDM is often played in nightclubs, at festivals, and on the radio.

Origins

The history of EDM is long and complex, with roots in several different genres including house, techno, disco, and more. The term “EDM” was first coined in the early 1990s, but it didn’t become widely used until the early 2000s.

EDM is created using a variety of electronic instruments and equipment, including turntables, synthesizers, drum machines, and computer software. DJs and producers use these tools to create original music that can be played at clubs, festivals, and other live events.

The sound of EDM has evolved over time, with different subgenres emerging in popularity. Currently, the two most popular subgenres are trap and future bass. Trap music is characterized by its heavy bass lines and 808 drum sounds, while future bass is known for its catchy melodies and intricate sound design.

Despite its growing popularity, EDM still faces some criticism from music purists who argue that it is not “real” music. However, there is no denying that EDM has become a global phenomenon, with legions of fans all over the world.

Popularity

The genre has seen a significant increase in popularity over the past few years. In the United States, EDM was first popularized in the late 1990s by radioshows such as Pete Tong’s essential mix and Judge Jules’ Global Warm up on BBC Radio 1. The early 2000s saw the rise of EDM festivals such as Defqon.1, Tomorrowland, and Ultra Music Festival. In 2012, Skrillex and Avicii were ranked 3rd and 4th on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid DJs respectively. In 2013, Tiësto replaced Madonna as the highest-paid DJ in the world.

In 2014, dance music sales surpassed those of any other genre for the first time in the US. According to a report by IMS Business Report and former Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge, “EDM has become one of the most powerful forces in music.”

What are the benefits of EDM?

Improved mental health

EDM has been shown to have a number of benefits for mental health, including reducing anxiety and improving moods. In one study, anxiety levels were significantly reduced in participants who listened to EDM compared to those who didn’t (1).

Other studies have shown that EDM can improve moods and reduce stress levels. In one study, participants who listened to EDM had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol after completing a stressful task than those who didn’t listen to EDM (2).

EDM has also been shown to improve cognitive function and increase serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in regulating mood and is linked with happiness and well-being. In one study, participants who listened to EDM had increased levels of serotonin in their brains compared to those who didn’t listen to EDM (3).

Thus, listening to EDM can have a positive impact on mental health by reducing anxiety and improving moods. Additionally, EDM can also improve cognitive function and increase serotonin levels in the brain.

Improved physical health

The benefits of EDM are not only limited to the mental plane. In fact, dancing to electronic music can result in a plethora of physical benefits as well. One of the most significant advantages is improved cardiovascular health.

A study that was published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing found that dancing can have a positive impact on heart health by reducing blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels. Furthermore, dance movements help to increase bone density and improve joint function.

Additionally, the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University conducted a study which found that people who danced regularly had better balance, coordination, and flexibility than those who did not dance.

How can I get involved in EDM?

If you love electronic dance music and want to get involved in the Suffolk community, then joining the Electronic Dance Music Club is a great way to do so! This club is open to all students and provides a great way to meet other music lovers. We hold meetings every week to discuss new music, upcoming events, and ways to get involved in the community.

Join a club

To get involved in EDM (electronic dance music) culture, one of the best things you can do is join an electronic dance music club. This can provide you with a group of like-minded people to enjoy music with, as well as access to resources such as DJs, venues and equipment. If there’s not an EDM club at your school, you could start one!

Go to concerts

A great way to get involved in the EDM scene is to go to concerts. This is a great way to see what kind of music you like and to find out about new artists. You can also meet people who share your interest in EDM.

Produce your own music

A very effective way of getting involved in EDM is to actually produce your own music. Suffolk Community College has a state of the art music production facility that is available for all students to use. You will need to take a class in order to use the facility, but once you have completed the class you will be able to use the facility whenever you want.

Conclusion

Dance music has come a long way since its inception in the 1970s. It has evolved and grown in popularity, and is now enjoyed by people of all ages. The Suffolk Community College Electronic Dance Music Club is a great way for students to enjoy this type of music. The club provides a fun and safe environment for students to listen to, learn about, and discuss dance music.
