The genre developed in the 1950s and 1960s from the regional sound of south Louisiana, southeast Texas and southwest Mississippi. Newman, Huey Smith & The Clowns, Bobby Charles, Ernie K-Doe, Frankie Ford and others.

Swamp pop is sometimes known as “south Louisiana’s answer to rockabilly”. The genre’s popularity peaked in the 1960s; by the 1970s it was less widely heard.
