What is Techno Music?

Techno is a type of electronic dance music that originated in Detroit, Michigan in the United States during the mid-1980s. The first techno tracks were produced by Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, who are often referred to as “the Belleville three”. Techno is generally repetitive instrumental music produced for use in a continuous DJ set. The central rhythmic component is most often in common time (4/4), where time is marked with a bass drum on each quarter note pulse, claps or snare strokes every second eighth note. Hi-hats usually play every second 16th note (semi-quaver).

The main distinguishing feature of techno compared to other forms of electronic dance music is that it is much more mechanised; the beats are produced by automated drum machines and synthesizers rather than by sampling existing records. Juan Atkins has said that ” techno is an extension of Detroit’s vision of the future.”Kevin Saunderson has said that “techno is about interpreting technology and using technology.”
