While the books can be read in any order, there is an underlying chronology to the series which becomes increasingly important as the series progresses.

Themes and Setting

Discworld is a comedic fantasy series written by British author Terry Pratchett, set on the Discworld, a flat world balanced on the backs of four elephants which in turn stand on the back of a giant turtle. The series parodies or satirizes many real-world topics through its fantasy setting.

The main theme of the series is death, which is personified in the character Death, who appears in every book. As mortality is inevitable, Pratchett uses death as a metaphor for various deep and enlightening topics such as fear, sex, religion, and intelligence.

The series is set primarily in the fictional country of Ankh-Morpork, with frequent references to other locations such as Lancre, Uberwald and Klatch. The city of Ankh-Morpork is described as a dirty and polluted metropolis which is rich in crime, yet filled with many interesting and diverse characters.
