What is Electronic Dance Music?

Electronic Dance Music, also known as EDM, is a type of music that is often played in nightclubs, festivals, and other venues. EDM is characterized by a strong beat and often has a “drop” in which the music becomes more intense.

The History of Electronic Dance Music

The origins of electronic dance music (EDM) can be traced back to the early 1970s, when musicians began experimenting with electronic instruments and synthesizers. In the 1980s, the advent of new technologies such as drum machines and sequencers allowed for the creation of more complex EDM, which became increasingly popular in nightclubs and on the radio. EDM reached its mainstream breakthrough in the 1990s with the advent of “rave culture” and the rise of legendary DJs such as John Digweed and Sasha. Today, EDM is one of the most popular genres of music in the world, with a global following that spans all age groups.

The Different Types of Electronic Dance Music

There are many different genres of Electronic Dance Music (EDM), each with their own subgenres, and new ones appearing all the time. Here is a list of some of the more common genres and subgenres, with a brief description of each:

-House: A genre that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s. It was initially influenced by Disco, but has since evolved to include a wide variety of subgenres. House music is characterized by a strong 4/4 beat and often includes samples from other genres of music.
-Techno: A genre that emerged from Detroit in the late 1980s. It is characterized by a heavy use of synthesizers and drum machines, with a focus on minimalism. Techno is often darker and more experimental than other EDM genres.
-Trance: A genre that developed in the 1990s, originating in Germany. It is characterized by a hypnotic or uplifting sound, often with arpeggiated synths and melodies. Trance can be either fast or slow, but is typically around 128 beats per minute.
-Drum & Bass: A genre that developed in the UK in the early 1990s. It is characterized by its fast tempo (usually 160-180 bpm) and heavily syncopated drums. Drum & bass often has breaks or pauses between basslines and drumbeats, giving it a very distinctive sound.
-Dubstep: A genre that originated in London in the late 2000s. It is characterized by its heavy bass sounds, shuffling rhythms, and ‘wobble’ basslines. Dubstep typically has a tempo of around 140 bpm.
