Rick James was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. His career spanned over two decades, during which he earned eight Gold records. Rick James is often cited as one of the pioneers of funk music. He was posthumously inducted into the Stone Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.

Rick James was born James Ambrose Johnson Jr. on February 1, 1948, in Buffalo, New York. He was the third of eight children born to Mabel and James Johnson Sr. His father was a steelworker and his mother was a homemaker. When Rick was ten years old, his family moved to Canada where he began playing drums in a local band called The Mynah Birds. The band also included future superstar Neil Young on guitar.

In 1964, The Mynah Birds signed with Motown Records and recorded their first single, “Mynah Bird Hop”/”I’ll Die Trying”. The single was not successful and the band broke up soon after its release.

Rick returned to America and enlisted in the United States Navy where he served for four years. After being discharged from the Navy, Rick moved to Los Angeles where he started working as a session musician. He played drums on several hits for The Temptations including “Cloud Nine” (1968) and “I Can’t Get Next To You” (1969). He also played bass on Marvin Gaye’s hit single “What’s Going On” (1971).

In 1972, Rick signed with Motown as a solo artist and released his debut album Come Get It!, which featured the hit single “You And I”. His follow-up album Cold Blooded (1973) generated two more hit singles: “Give It To Me Baby” and “Mary Jane”. These three singles would go on to become his biggest hits. Throughout the 1970s, Rick continued to release successful albums including Fire It Up (1977), Bustin’ Out Of L Seven (1978),Street Songs (1981),Throwin’ Down (1982) and Cold Blooded House Party Live!(1983). In addition to his work as a solo artist, Rick also wrote and produced hits for other Motown artists including Teena Marie (“I Need Your Lovin'”), Smokey Robinson (“Ebony Eyes”), the Mary Jane Girls(“In My House”), Diana Ross (“Muscles”) and Billy Ocean (“Caribbean Queen”).

Rick’s success came to a halt in the late 1980s when he was convicted of assault and drug-related charges. He served time in prison from 1990 to 1996. After his release from prison, Rick attempted to make a comeback but he never regained the level of success he had achieved in the 1970s and 1980s
