History

Pike Place Fish Market, often called “the soul of Seattle”, is a public market located in Seattle, Washington, United States. The market opened on August 17, 1907, and is one of the oldest continuously operated public markets in the United States. It is a place of business for many local farmers, craftspeople and merchants. Like most markets, it is highly seasonal, with more varieties of fish available in the spring and summer. It is a major tourist destination and is known for its lively atmosphere and its crab fishing Trips.

The market was founded by John Wirtz, who bought the property on Pike Place in 1907 with the intention of building a public market. He leased the property to Pierre Pomerleau, who opened a French-style market on the site. The market originally occupied just a few stalls on the ground floor of the Wirtz Building, but quickly expanded to fill the entire building. In 1913, the City of Seattle approved plans for a new fishmarket building to be built at the corner of Pike Place and First Avenue. Construction of the new building began in 1914 and was completed in 1915.

In 1921, Pomerleau sold the market to Frederick Anhalt Jr., who expanded it further. In 1929, Anhalt built a second MarketFront building on Western Avenue to house additional stalls and shops. In 1931, he added an outdoor seating area along Pike Place, which quickly became popular with shoppers and tourists.

In 1938, Anhalt sold the market to Harry Jerome and Albert Levinson. Jerome and Levinson made several changes to the market, including adding a clock tower and relocating some of the stalls. In 1970, they sold the market to Sidney Gerber. Gerber made several changes to the MarketFront buildings, including adding an arcade and expanding the outdoor seating area. He also added a number of non-food businesses to the MarketFront buildings, such as galleries and souvenir shops.

In 1974?5*8rk Times proclaimed that Pike Place Fish Market was “the soul of Seattle” coffeehouses were “the birthplace of grunge music.” The article described Pike Place Fish Market as “a place where everybody knows your name – or at least they act like it.”
