The Plot

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialisation in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. The novel is partly based on historical facts and Leroux’s own imagination.

The phantom, later named Erik in the novel, is a deformed man who was born during the 17th century in Lithuania. He grows up to be an architect and masterfully practices his art, even though he is shunned by society because of his deformity.

Erik moves to Paris where he meets Christine Daaé, a beautiful young singer who reminds him of his long-dead mother. Christine is being instructed by the Phantom in music and she falls in love with him, although she does not know his true identity.

The Phantom becomes obsessed with making Christine a star and does everything in his power to make sure she gets the lead role in the new Opera House that is being built. However, when Christine’s fiance Raoul comes to visit her, the Phantom becomes jealous and starts to stalk them both.

The Phantom ultimately kidnaps Christine and takes her back to his underground lair where he has been living for years. He reveals his true identity to her and declares his love for her, but Christine refuses to return his affections.

The Phantom then threatens to kill Raoul unless Christine agrees to marry him, but she still refuses. Enraged, the Phantom starts a fire in the opera house which kills many people includingRaoul’s younger brother Gustave.

Christine finally agrees to marry Erik and they leave together, but as they are leaving Miller’s Point underwater Erik realizes that he cannot go on living without his music and stays behind while Christine escapes.

The Music of the Night

The Composer

The Music of the Night is composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and his long-time collaborator, Charles Hart. The song is sung by the phantom in the musical, The Phantom of the Opera. The music was originally written to be an instrumental piece, but the lyrics were added later by Richard Stilgoe.

The piece is written in the key of B♭ major and is set in common time with a moderate tempo of 66 beats per minute. It begins with a four-bar introduction which features a single chord repeated four times. The melody proper begins on the fifth bar and is sung by the phantom. The lyrics talk about how the music of the night can help to transform the world and make it a better place.

The piece features a number of different musical elements, including:
– Use of repetition to create a sense of trance-like hypnotism

– A crescendo leading up to the climax of the song
– use of leitmotifs throughout to represent different characters and ideas in the musical
