The Rocker: The Making Of

The film The Rocker tells the story of a failed musician who gets a second chance at success when his nephew’s band, A.D.D., scores a gig opening for Vesuvius, the 1980’s hair metal band he once played in. Behind the scenes, Rainn Wilson played Robert “Fish” Fishman, the failed musician-turned-roadie, while Jane Lynch played Vesuvius singer Christina Crump.

The Rocker was directed by Peter Cattaneo, who also directed The Full Monty. Cattaneo was interested in making a film about a group of friends in a band, and he was drawn to the story of The Rocker because he felt it had the potential to be “an underdog story with music.”

To prepare for their roles, the cast members took lessons from experts in various musical fields. Wilson took drum lessons from Jeff Porcaro, while Lynch took singing lessons from Pat Benatar’s vocal coach. In addition, they studied videos of real-life 1980’s hair metal bands to learn how to perform onstage.

During production, Cattaneo made sure to keep the set fun and lighthearted. He wanted the cast and crew to feel like they were making a “happy movie,” and he encouraged them to sing and dance between takes. This positive attitude helped create an enjoyable atmosphere on set and helped the cast members bond with each other.

The film was released in 2008 to mixed reviews, but Wilson and Lynch’s performances were praised by many critics. The Rocker ultimately grossed $5 million at the box office worldwide.
