Introduction

The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria in the months before the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with Georg von Trapp, the widowed father of seven children, and together they have to deal with the forthcoming Nazi annexation of Austria.

The Sound of Music was first presented on Broadway in 1959 and was an instant success, running for 1,443 performances. The original production won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and spawned numerous revivals and a 1965 film version that won five Academy Awards. The show has become one of the most popular musicals ever written, and its songs “My Favorite Things”, “Edelweiss”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Maria”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “The Sound of Music” have become standards.
