Techno music is a type of electronic dance music that emerged in the Detroit area in the mid-to-late 1980s. The first techno tracks were produced by Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, who were later joined by other producers such as Jeff Mills and Carl Craig. techno is characterized by a repetitive 4/4 beat, often in time with a hi-hat cymbal on every quarter note and a heavy bass drum on the downbeat.

Tech House: This is a fusion of techno and house music that combines elements of both genres. It is often characterized by stripped back grooves, minimalism, and an hypnotic atmosphere. Key artists include Nick Curly and Luca Bacchetti.

Minimal Techno: As the name suggests, this style of techno emphasizes minimalism both in terms of sound and composition. It is often sparse, stripped back, and hypnotic with a focus on rhythm over melody. Leading minimal techno artists include Richie Hawtin, Daniel Bell, Robert Hood, Lawrence, Steve Bug, Martin Buttrich ,and Vlad Caia .

After an incredible weekend at Tomorrowland, it’s safe to say that techno music had a comeback in 2018. From the more mainstream sets by artists like Martin Garrix and Axwell ^ Ingrosso, to the underground sets by the likes of Joseph Capriati and Charlotte de Witte, there was something for everyone.

What was most impressive about this year’s edition was the overall production value. The stages were massive and immersive, and the sound quality was impeccable. Even though Tomorrowland is known for being a EDM festival, they did a great job of showcasing the best of what techno has to offer.
