Pre-2010

As we get closer and closer to 2010, house music is becoming more and more popular. This list is of the top 20 South African house music tracks that were released pre-2010. You’ll find a mix of old and new tracks, as well as some that are sure to get you moving.

“Bum Bum” – DJ Cleo

“Bum Bum” is a song by South African Kwaito artist DJ Cleo, released in 2003 as the lead single from his second studio album Es’khaleni. The song became one of the biggest Kwaito hits of 2003, reaching number one on various South African radio stations and spending eight weeks at number one on 5FM’s Top 40 chart. It was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 2004 South African Music Awards.

“Y-tjukutja” – Uhuru

This was the biggest South African house music track of 2009, spending months at the top of the charts. It was a massive international hit and put Uhuru on the map.

“Wena” – TKZee

TKZee’s “Wena” was released in 1998 and was an instant hit in South Africa. The track is notable for its catchy hook and use of traditional African instruments. “Wena” was one of the first house tracks to achieve mainstream success in South Africa and is still popular today.

“Dakar” – Trompies

This track is off the album “Pre-2010 – Top 20 South African House Music Tracks” by Trompies. It was released in 2008.

“Bhenga” – Mzekezeke

Bhenga is a South African house music genre that emerged in the early 2010s. The style is defined by its use of traditional African percussion instruments, such as the djembe, and often features call-and-response vocals. Bhenga tracks typically have a high energy, positive vibe and are often infused with elements of Kwaito music.

Mzekezeke is one of the most well-known artists in the bhenga genre. His 2003 track “Bhenga” was a huge hit in South Africa, and helped to popularize the genre. Mzekezeke’s unique style blends traditional bhenga percussion with modern house beats, resulting in a sound that is both fresh and familiar.

“Gwara Gwara” is a South African house music track by DJ Maphorisa. It was released in 2010 and peaked at number 1 on the South African House Music charts. The track is named after the popular dance move of the same name.

Mapara A Jazz is a South African house music group made up of brothers, Thapelo and Things, who are based in Johannesburg. Their first release was the track “Sbucardo Da Dj”, which became a hit in South Africa, reaching number one on some radio station charts. The track also gained popularity in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, where it was played on BBC Radio 1.

“Dj Call Me” – Master KG

Dj Call Me is a South African house music track by Master KG. It was released in December 2010 as a single from his album of the same name. The song was a commercial success, peaking at number one on the South African iTunes chart and number two on the Shazam South Africa Top 100 chart. It has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa.
