Best Electronic Albums of 2020

In a year of great music across all genres, these are the records that made the biggest impact on us in 2020. Although the world may feel like it’s falling apart, music has the ability to bring people together and offer a escapism from the everyday. These are the albums that did just that.

“FUTURE”

If there was an overarching theme to the best electronic albums of 2020, it would be escapism. In a year defined by a global pandemic, social unrest, and political turmoil, many artists turned inward, making introspective music that provided listeners with a much-needed sense of calm. Others looked to the past, mining sounds and styles from previous decades to create something new. And still others looked to the future, experimenting with futuristic sonics and mind-bending textures.

Here are our picks for the best electronic albums of 2020.

“FUTURE” by Gazelle Twin
Gazelle Twin’s “FUTURE” is an album about technology gone awry, about how our ever-growing reliance on devices and artificial intelligence might one day lead to our undoing. It’s a dark and unsettling record, made all the more so by Gazelle Twin’s arresting visuals. The music is equally arresting, veering from eerie ambient passages to pounding industrial workouts. It’s a bold and ambitious statement that further cements Gazelle Twin’s status as one of the most exciting electronic artists working today.

“KIDS SEE GHOSTS”

American rapper, singer, and record producer Kanye West and American record producer, singer, and songwriter Drew Aaron Scott, better known as Kid Cudi, released their eponymous debut album Kids See Ghosts on June 8, 2018. The album was met with widespread critical acclaim.

In a review for Consequence of Sound, KenyonHopkins praised the album’s production and lyrics, calling it “a beautiful mess of an album that sees two rap legends sounding reinvigorated and hungry”. Jordan Bassett of NME also praised the album’s production, writing that it “finds its strength in its ethereal sonics”, while commending West and Scott for their “expansive” raps.

“Magna Carta Holy Grail”

In June 2013, Jay-Z released his twelfth studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail. The album was produced by a variety of high-profile producers, including Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Rick Rubin, and Pharrell Williams.
