It was released as a digital download on 6 January 2017 as one of the double lead singles from his third studio album ÷ (2017), along with “Castle on the Hill”. The song debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart in February 2017 and has since peaked at number one in more than 30 countries, including the US, Australia and Germany. On 21 August 2017, Billboard named it the ‘Song of the Summer’. With this achievement, “Shape of You” became only the fifth song to simultaneously hold the top three positions on Billboard’s Hot 100, Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Top 40 charts.

The album received generally mixed reviews from music critics and debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 with 196,000 album-equivalent units, including 73,000 pure sales.
