The group released their debut album, Five Live Yardbirds, in 1964; it peaked at number six in the United Kingdom. A second album was released later that year but it failed to chart. The group enjoyed their greatest success with the singles “For Your Love”, “Heart Full of Soul” and “Over Under Sideways Down”. They also had moderate success with the single “Evil Hearted You”.

The yardbirds toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States until 1968 when they broke up amid creative differences. They reformed briefly in 1992–1993 for a short-lived reunion tour before officially reuniting again in 2003.
