The Sets

The Sets
The production features a spectacular new design by Paul Brown, Tony Award-winning designer of The King’s Speech and War Horse. The Phantom’s underground lair is brought to life with Paint Shop and Pyrotechnics.

The magnificent new chandelier, twice the size of the original, plays a pivotal role in one of the most dramatic scenes in musical theatre.

Original sets and costumes are used in Act One while new sets and costumes are used in Act Two.

The Costumes

The Phantom of the Opera has some of the most iconic and well-recognized costumes in all of musical theater. From the dramatic black cape and half-mask of the Phantom to the sequined gowns of the operatic diva Carlotta, each costume is essential to creating the world of the Paris opera house.

While many of the original costumes from the 1987 Broadway production are still used in touring productions, some have been updated or replaced over the years. The most recent Broadway revival, which opened in 2018, featured all-new costumes designed by Tony Award winner Paul Tazewell.

If you’re lucky enough to see a live production of The Phantom of the Opera, pay close attention to the costumes – they play a vital role in setting the stage for this classic tale of love, loss, and mystery.

The Lighting

The lighting in the music box is an important aspect to consider when choosing a tour date. The lighting will be different depending on the time of day and the weather. If you are wanting to see the inside of the music box, it is best to choose a tour date that is during the daytime and when the weather is clear.

The Special Effects

One of the most important ways that music is used in Phantom of the Opera is to create an atmosphere of tension and suspense. In particular, the use of leitmotifs (recurring musical themes) helps to create a sense of unease and uneasiness. For example, the Phantom’s theme is first introduced when he appears in his box at the Opera House and creates a feeling of menace and foreboding.

The chandelier crash near the end of Act One is one of the most famous moments in Phantom of the Opera, and it is made all the more effective by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music. The sound of the crashing chandelier is punctuated by a loud, clanging motif that creates a sense of chaos and confusion.

The Phantom’s love theme, ‘All I Ask Of You’, is perhaps the most beautiful and romantic moment in Phantom of the Opera. The simple melody is powerfully emotional, and it conveys both the pain and passion of unrequited love.
