The first fall out window is from the early 1990s until around 2000. This is when the grunge movement was at its height and many of the biggest bands in the genre were at their peak. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains were all huge during this time and their success helped pave the way for other groups like Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, and even Creed. While there were definitely other genres being popular at the time, grunge was definitely king and its influence can still be felt today.

The second wave of metalcore began in the early 2000s and lasted until around 2010. This wave was led by nu metal and rap metal bands such as Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and Slipknot. These bands combined elements of hardcore punk with heavy metal to create a sound that was both heavier and more aggressive than anything that had come before. This wave of metalcore was extremely popular and spawned a number of sub-genres, such as deathcore and metalcore.
