Judith Babirye’s Life

Judith Babirye was born in Uganda in 1965. She is a gospel singer, songwriter, and minister. She has been active in the music industry since the early 1990s. In addition to her work in music, she is also a social activist.

Early life

Judith was born on 10th July 1976, in Mbale district, Uganda. Her father, Joel Babirye, was a preacher with the Pentecostal Assemblies of God. Joel and his wife Lucy had six children together; Judith was the third child. Lucy died when Judith was only four years old, so Joel married again and had four more children.

Judith started school at Mbale Primary School and then went to Ntare School for her O-Levels. She grew up singing in the church choir with her siblings. When she was 15 years old, she wrote her first gospel song, called “Mumummuye”, which means “Do not be afraid” in Luganda.

In 1994, Judith went to Makerere University to study biology and education. She continued writing songs and performing during her time at university. After she graduated, she started working as a teacher in Kampala.

Career

Babirye’s career started in); when she was signed by Trevor Dann to record her first album, Mwana Wamu Judi, with his production company TDM. The album was a moderate success. In Uganda it included the hits “Yesu Za” and “Ndi Mu Love”, which received significant airplay on local radio. It was followed in 1997 by her second album, So Amazing. This time, the production work was handled by Ethernet, a production company based in Kampala. The album was again a moderate success in Uganda, with the hit singles “Onona Pamoja” and “Ndi Mu Love”.

Her music has been praised for its ability to cross cultural boundaries and reach people from all walks of life.

Judith’s latest project is a live worship album entitled “Lord, I Give You My Heart.” Recorded at a church service in Uganda, the album features Judith leading a congregation of worshipers in singing praises to God. The result is an intimate and powerful recording that captures the heart of worship and showcases Judith’s incredible vocal talents.
