Introduction

The University for Rock & Blues Music Studies (URBMS) is a research and teaching institution dedicated to the study of rock and blues music and their legacies. Founded in 2006, URBMS is the first institution of its kind in the world.

URBMS offers a unique interdisciplinary approach to the study of rock and blues music, drawing on scholarship from a range of disciplines including history, musicology, anthropology, sociology, and popular culture studies. Our faculty and students come from all over the world, and our courses are taught in English.

URBMS is located in Clarksdale, Mississippi, known as the “Crossroads” because of its blues heritage. Clarksdale is also home to the Delta Blues Museum, one of the world’s premier blues museums.

History

The University of Rock & Blues Music Studies (or The University for Rock & Blues Music Studies) is a research and teaching institution located in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. The university was founded in 2006 by Dr. Robert Gordon and Dr. Peter N. Buck with the goal of providing graduate and undergraduate students with specialized training in rock & blues music history, theory, and performance.

The University for Rock & Blues Music Studies is the first institution of its kind in the world, and offers both on-campus and online courses. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

In addition to its academic programs, the university also houses the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which is open to the public.
