The University of Michigan Dance Department will hold their winter recital on December 9th at the Power Center. This year’s recital will feature electronic music for the first time ever!

Introduction

The University of Michigan Dance Department will present their annual winter dance recital, “Dance Agenda,” on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1 at 8:00 pm in the Earl V. Moore Building, Ann Arbor. This year’s recital will feature electronic music by various artists including Alvin Lucier, Michael Tilson Thomas, and David Tudor.

What is electronic music?

Electronic music is a genre of music that is produced using electronic equipment. This can include various types of electronic instruments, such as synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencers, as well as live electronics. Electronic music is often associated with various subgenres, such as techno, house, trance, drum and bass, and dubstep.

The University of Michigan’s dance recital

The University of Michigan’s dance recital on May 5 will feature electronic music for the first time in the school’s history. The performance, titled “Dance 10: Electric U,” will showcase original compositions by University of Michigan dance students and alumni, as well as pieces by internationally-recognized guest artists.

“Dance 10: Electric U” is part of a larger initiative by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance to explore and celebrate the intersections between music and technology. Other recent events in this series include a performance by world-renowned DJ and producer Skrillex, and a talk by electronic music pioneer born in Los Angeles, Holly Herndon.

“We are thrilled to be able to present this exciting new music to our audiences,” said James Henry, director of the University of Michigan Dance Department. “This is an incredible opportunity for our students to collaborate with some of the most innovative artists working today.”

The program for “Dance 10: Electric U” includes four world premiere commissions, as well as works by established electronic musicians like Holly Herndon, Mehdi Hosseini, Jlin, and Yotam Mann. The evening will also feature a new work by 2013 MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Miguel Gutierrez, set to music by Oscar-nominated composer Dustin O’Halloran.

The recital will feature electronic music

The University of Michigan dance recital on May 5 will feature electronic music for the first time in the school’s history.

Dance professor Teresa Fazioli said the inclusion of electronic music is a response to the growing popularity of the genre among students.

“We want to make sure that we’re providing students with opportunities to experience a wide range of genres and styles,” Fazioli said. “In recent years, we’ve seen an increase in the number of students interested in electronic music, so we thought it would be a great addition to our recital.”

The recital will feature two pieces of electronic music, both of which were composed by University of Michigan students. The first piece, titled “Pulse,” was composed by junior Emma Wang. The second piece, titled “Resonance,” was composed by senior Alex Johnson.

Fazioli said she was excited to add electronic music to the recital because it is a genre that is often overlooked in the world of dance.

“I think electronic music is often seen as being either too avant-garde or too commercial,” Fazioli said. “But I think there is a lot of beautiful and moving electronic music being made today that deserves to be heard.”

The University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance will be featuring a variety of electronic music at their upcoming dance recital. Some of the pieces that will be performed include “There Is No Place Like Home” by Tod Machover, “Lighthouse” by Matthew Herbert, and “In C” by Terry Riley.

Conclusion

The University of Michigan Dance Recital will feature electronic music on May 5th. This is a free event and open to the public.
