Christmas Jazz Standards

The Christmas season is upon us and what better way to get into the holiday spirit than with some great Christmas Jazz Standards. This type of music has become more popular in recent years as people look for something a little different than the typical Christmas music. Jazz Standards are the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.

“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is a popular Christmas song written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and was first sung by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. The song’s original intent was to convey the severity of the times during World War II while still offering a message of hope. The third verse, which is often omitted, mentions that those absent from the singer’s life (due to war) will one day return home.

The lyric “Until then, we’ll have to muddle through somehow” sums up not only the singer’s determination to persevere and find happiness despite her current sorrows, but also the nation’s resolve during one of the darkest periods in American history. This song has been covered by countless artists over the years, but Judy Garland’s original performance remains one of the most beloved versions.

“The Christmas Song”

One of the most covered songs of all time, “The Christmas Song” was originally written by Mel TormĂ© and Robert Wells in 1945. It first became a hit for Nat King Cole in 1946, and has been a holiday standard ever since. This easy-going bossa nova arrangement will give your students a chance to work on their Latin rhythm while they enjoy singing this classic holiday song.

“Winter Wonderland”

“Winter Wonderland” is a popular Christmas song written in 1934 by Felix Bernard and Dick Smith. The original version was sung by Richard Himber and his Ritz Carlton Orchestra. The best-known version was recorded in 1945 by Bing Crosby with John Scott Trotter and His Orchestra.

The song is about a winter scene, where the narrator sees children playing and ice skaters skating on a frozen pond. In the original version, the rink is said to be “in Central Park, New York City”. In the Crosby recording, the rink is in Wollman Memorial Rink in Central Park South. The second verse talks about how couples can skate hand in hand while “appropriate music” is played by “the band”.

The third verse describes how Santa Claus comes to the rink, while all of the children clap their hands and sing along with him as he goes down “their list one by one”, checking it twice to see if they have been naughty or nice. Santa then gives out presents to all of the good children before leaving on his sleigh pulled by eight reindeer.
