The Uptown Funk: The Music Video Director’s Cut blog features the behind the scenes story of how the popular music video was made.

The Music Video

Uptown Funk, the music video by Director X, is an excellent example of how a music video can enhance a song. The video features dancers in a colorful, high-energy routine that perfectly matches the tone of the song. The video also tells a story, which is a creative way to engage the viewers and keep them entertained.

The Concept

Uptown Funk was conceived as a song that would make people want to dance, and the music video needed to reflect that. To that end, the team decided to set the video in various public places around New York City, with people of all ages and backgrounds dancing along.

With so many different characters and locations, the video needed a unifying element, and that came in the form of director Bruno Mars. He would be the constant throughout the video, dancing his way through the city and bringing everyone together.

The result is a fun and joyous music video that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the song.

The Preparation

When it comes to making a music video, there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes before the cameras start rolling. For the video for “Uptown Funk,” director Bruno Mars and his team spent months planning and preparing everything from the choreography to the wardrobe.

With a cast of over 50 dancers, Bruno had to make sure that everyone was on the same page and knew what they were supposed to be doing. He worked with choreographers Justin Timberlake and Marty Kudelka to come up with witty and fresh dance moves that would complement the song perfectly.

Then it was time to start thinking about what everyone would wear. Bruno wanted the fashion in the video to be inspired by ’70s funk and hip-hop, so he enlisted the help of costume designer Annie Spitz. Together, they came up with some truly iconic looks, like Mars’ sequined jacket and silver pants combo.

With all of the pieces in place, it was finally time to start filming. But even then, there were still some surprises in store…

The Shoot

The shoot for the music video took place over two days in February 2015. The first day was spent filming in various locations around Los Angeles, including a dance studio, a coffee shop, and an alleyway. The second day of shooting was dedicated to filming the choreographed dance sequences.

The video features over fifty dancers, all of whom were choreographed by Jamal Sims. In addition to the dancers, there are also cameo appearances by singer Marshawn Lynch and actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
