The song was released as the album’s lead single on 10 November 2014 in the United States and on 9 January 2015 in the United Kingdom. Jeff Bhasker assisted the artists in co-writing and co-producing the track, with additional writing from Philip Lawrence. This is Mars’ fourth collaboration with Ronson and sixth with Bhasker. Recorded at Westside Studios in Santa Monica, California, “Uptown Funk” was engineered by mixing engineer Serban Ghenea. John Hanes provided additional Pro Tools engineering for the song.

“Uptown Funk” prominently features Mars and his backing band The Hooligans dancing exuberantly around brass instruments including trumpets and trombones while singing lyrics that convey a strong confidence.
