What is Electro House?

Electro house is a subgenre of house music characterized by a prominent bassline and/or tempo. It was first popularized by Daft Punk’s single “Da Funk”, released in 1997.[1]

The term has since been used to describe songs by various artists, such as Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.” (2007),[2] Knife Party’s “Internet Friends” (2011),[3] and Porter Robinson’s “Language” (2012).[4][5][6][7]

In electro house, the main drums usually consist of a clap or snare, with a hi-hat often being present. The bassline is typically accompanied by a synth lead melody.[8] Electro house is often characterized by its heavy use of computer-generated sounds and samples, as well as hardware synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines.[9][10][11]

The genre has been described as a “fusion of Chicago house, ’80s electro, and techno.”[12][13] It has also been described as “a cross between discohouse and hard techno”.[14]
