The club has been in operation since 1961 and is one of the oldest and most respected folk clubs in the country. It is a member of the National Folk Federation of Australia and the Victorian Traditional Music Association.
The VFMC organises a wide range of events each year, including concerts, dances, workshops, festivals and social gatherings. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Folk Rag, which keep members up to date with what’s happening in the folk world both locally and further afield.
The club’s musical roots
The Victorian Folk Music Club has its musical roots in the rich cultural diversity of Melbourne’s inner north. The Club was founded in 1978 by two local residents, Doug and Jean Woods, who were passionate about folk music and wanted to share their love of the genre with others.
The Club held its first meeting in the back room of a local hotel, with just a handful of people in attendance. But word quickly spread about the new club, and soon it was attracting members from all over Melbourne. Today, the Victorian Folk Music Club is one of the largest and most active folk clubs in Australia, with a membership that spans all ages and backgrounds.
The Club is dedicated to promoting folk music in all its forms, from traditional songs and tunes to contemporary pieces written by Australian artists. The club hosts regular events including concerts, dances, workshops, sing-a-rounds and camping trips. It also produces a monthly newsletter, The Folk Rag, which features news, reviews and articles on all aspects of folk music.

One of the mainstay activities of the Victorian Folk Music Club is singing from our huge and ever-growing collection of songs. The club’s songbook currently contains over 1200 songs, from traditional ballads to modern compositions, and from all over the world. If you’re a member, you can borrow the songbook from the club library – just ask at the desk.
