History
The Vijana Jazz Band was formed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1952. The band’s original lineup included brothers Joseph and George Kihumulo on saxophone and clarinet, respectively; Hassan bin Juma on trumpet; Saidi Katana on trombone; Juma Ngoma on bass; and Abdul Mbwana on drums. The band’s sound was a unique blend of African rhythms and melodies with American jazz and swing influences.
The Vijana Jazz Band was one of the most popular bands in Tanzania during the 1950s and 1960s. They regularly performed at nightclubs, hotels, and concert halls in Dar es Salaam. The band also toured extensively throughout East Africa, including Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
