Child was born Julia Carolyn McWilliams in Pasadena, California, the daughter of John McWilliams, Jr., a rural banker, and his wife, Julia Carolyn (née Weston). She was raised with her sister Dorothy McWilliams in Pasadena. The children were exposed to European cuisine and wine at an early age by their mother, who took them on trips to France. As a young child, Child found many of her meals unpalatable and preferred not to eat at all. When she did sit down for a meal she preferred plain foods;Child later recalled that she would often force herself to eat it just so that she could get back to playing.

During high school Child attended Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and studied under Max Bugnard and Fernande Garvin. Her interest in cooking increased when she realized that she could make food that tasted better than what she was being served at school. Upon her successful graduation from Le Cordon Bleu, Child was offered the position of kitchen assistant at the Ritz-Hôtel in Paris; however, because of the outbreak of World War II, Child instead joined the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as a research assistant. She eventually became the organization’s Chief of the Nutrition Branch.

Julia Child was an American chef, author, and television personality. She is best known for her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, as well as her long-running television series The French Chef, which debuted in 1963.

Child was born in Pasadena, California, and raised in Santa Barbara. She later studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, before returning to the United States, where she began working as a research assistant at Boston’s WGBH public television station. It was here that she met Simone Beck and Louise Bertholle, with whom she would go on to co-author Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

The book was an instant success, and Child subsequently appeared on several popular US TV shows, including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Dick Cavett Show. She also hosted her own cooking show, The French Chef, for 10 years. In later life, Child wrote several more cookbooks and occasionally appeared on TV shows such as Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live. She died in 2004 at the age of 91.
