The musical contains Queen songs arranged into a sung-through rock opera. The story follows a group of Bohemians who struggle against the Darth Vader-like “Globalsoft” and its head, the Killer Queen, for the freedom to wear ripped jeans and listen to unspecified “real music” instead of the homogenized popular music that has conquered the world. Many references are made to other works by Queen, including their earlier works, such as “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Are the Champions”, “Somebody to Love”, and “Killer Queen”.

The Lyrics

The lyrics, written by Ben Elton, are frequently witty and ironic. “Under Pressure” is a song by the English rock band Queen and British singer David Bowie. It was released as a single in 1981, reaching number one in the UK charts.

The Set

The original set for We Will Rock You was designed by Mark Fisher and Paul Brown. It featured a bleached white backdrop, with a series of concentric oval-shaped video screens looming overhead. These screens would display various images and video footage related to the plot of the show. The set also included a number of large rock formations, which were used to create the illusion of being inside a rock concert venue.

The Costumes

The costumes for We Will Rock You were inspired by the fashion of the late 1970s and early 1980s, as well as by the punk and new wave movements of that era. The Queen tribute band, Queen Extravaganza, served as consultants on the costumes. Brian May stated that “We didn’t want [the costumes] to be period-perfect ’70s or ’80s. We wanted them to be futuristic.”

The costumes were designed by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, who won an Academy Award for their work on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. For We Will Rock You, they created a total of 350 unique costumes. Some of the more notable costumes include those worn by the characters Galileo Figaro (played by Brian Justin Crum), Killer Queen (played by Ruby Lewis), Britney (played by Joey Khoury), and Oz (played by Wayne Brady).

The Lighting

The quality of the lighting can make or break a performance. For “We Will Rock You”, the stage is constantly awash in color, with different lights signifying different times of day or different emotions. But it’s not just about pretty colors: the lighting also has to be functional, making sure that the actors can be seen by the audience and that they are well-lit when they need to be.

Lighting designer Paul Pyant says that he wanted to create a “constant sense of visual excitement” with the lighting, and he definitely succeeded. The show is full of dramatic moments, and the lighting helps to heighten the emotion and intensity of those scenes.

The Sound

We Will Rock You is a musical by Queen and Ben Elton that tells the story of a group of rebels who fight against the tyranny of an oppressive regime. The musical features some of Queen’s most iconic songs, including “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Are the Champions”, and “Under Pressure”.
