Grunge music is characterized by its dirty, distorted sound and its focus on personal, angsty lyrics. This type of music became popular in the early 1990s.

Origins

Grunge music is a subgenre of alternative rock that originated in the Seattle area of the United States in the mid-1980s. Grunge music is marked by a heavy, distorted guitar sound, a focus on authenticity, and a DIY (do it yourself) aesthetic. The grunge look is characterized by plaid flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and Doc Martens.

Seattle

Grunge music first originated in Seattle, Washington in the late 1980s. The style was developed by bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, who were influenced by punk rock and heavy metal. Grunge music is characterized by its raw, unpolished sound and themes of disillusionment and angst.

Washington

Washington is most often associated with the grunge music scene of the early 1990s, which produced bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. The scene was centered in Seattle and Tacoma, but Washington state as a whole (as well as neighboring Oregon) was considered part of the grunge movement. Some key venues in the development of grunge music were The Vogue nightclub in Seattle and The Orient Express in Tacoma.

The Music

Grunge music is characterized by a heavy, distorted guitar sound, often played with power chords, create a “thick” or “heavy” sound. Grunge also typically incorporates the use of feedback.

Sound

The ‘sound’ of grunge is notoriously difficult to define and pin down. Kurt Cobain, the singer/guitarist of Nirvana, famously said that when he and his bandmates were first starting out, they were simply trying to emulate their favorite groups – which included the Pixies, Mudhoney, and Sonic Youth – without really understanding what made them sound the way they did.

However, there are certain sonic characteristics that are generally agreed upon as being ‘grunge.’ These include heavy distortion on electric guitars (achieved by cranking up the amps and/or using overdrive/fuzz pedals), feedback, a focus on simplicity and ‘stripped down’ arrangements, and a general disdain for studio trickery or polished production values.

Lyrics

Grunge lyrics are often bleak, depressing, and full of angst. They deal with subjects like social alienation, apathy, drug addiction, and suicide. Many grunge songs are about dysfunctional relationships. And because the music is so loud and aggressive, the lyrics can be difficult to understand. But that’s part of the appeal—you have to work a little bit to decipher what the singers are trying to say.

Influences

Grunge music is often considered to be a reaction to the polished and highly produced music of the 1980s, as well as the commercialism and materialism that was prevalent in society at the time. Seattle, Washington is considered to be the epicenter of grunge music, with bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden leading the way. Other influential grunge bands included Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Mudhoney.

Grunge music is characterized by its raw and unpolished sound, as well as its lyrics which are often dark and angsty. The music often features heavy guitars and drums, and is sometimes described as being “muddy” sounding. Grunge songs are typically shorter than other rock songs, and are often played at a faster tempo.

The look of grunge musicians was also unique, with many wearing flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and plaid shirts. Some women in the grunge scene also adopted a more masculine look, sporting short hair and no makeup.

The Scene

Grunge music is often characterized by its “heavy” sound, which is created by a combination of distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and vocals. Grunge also typically has an aggressive or angry sound. The lyrics of grunge songs often deal with topics such as alienation, apathy, anxiety, depression, drug use, and Kurt Cobain himself wrote a lot about teen angst.

Fashion

Fashion in the grunge scene was marked by a rejection of the flashy, consumer-oriented styles of mainstream fashion in favor of more unkempt, anti-fashion styles. Common items included ripped denim jeans, flannel shirts, Birkenstock sandals, combat boots, and beanies. Dr. Martens boots were also popular among grunge fashionistas.

Many grunge fashionistas would shop for thrift store finds and layering was key to achieving the desired look. In grunge fashion, less was definitely more. Many style experts have cited the grunge look as being one of the most influential fashion movements of the 20th century.

Attitude

Most Grunge bands had a DIY approach to their career; they did not want to sign deals with major record companies and instead released their music on independent labels. This was in part due to the band’s anti-establishment views, but it also allowed them to maintain creative control over their music. Grunge bands were often cynical and angry, and their lyrics reflected this. They sang about topics such as depression, drug addiction, and suicide.

The look of Grunge bands was also part of their appeal. They dressed in second-hand clothes and did not care about looking “glamorous” or “perfect”. This was in stark contrast to the popular bands of the time, who were often criticized for being too polished and wealthy. The grunge look was later adopted by the mainstream fashion industry, which led to some criticism that the style had been “co-opted” by commercial interests.

Legacy

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was an American singer, songwriter, and musician who rose to fame as the lead singer and guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana. Cobain is considered one of the most iconic and influential musicians of the 20th century, and he achieved massive success with Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind, which topped charts around the world and became one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Cobain was born in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1967. He wasraised in a troubled home life and struggled with depression and addiction throughout his life. In 1992, Cobain married musician Courtney Love, with whom he had a daughter named Frances Bean Cobain. The couple’s relationship was tumultuous, and Cobain battled addiction and depression for much of their marriage. In April 1994, Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Seattle, Washington. He was 27 years old at the time of his death.
