Funk music began to gain popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. James Brown’s hit song “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” is often cited as one of the earliest examples of funk. Other important early funk artists include Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic, and George Clinton.

1970s

Funk music became popular in the 1970s. This was a genre of music that was created by African American musicians. It was a mix of soul, jazz, and R&B. The popularity of funk music was due to the new style of dance that was created called the “funk.”

James Brown and the Birth of Funk

Funk music began to gain popularity in the early 1970s with artists such as James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic. Brown’s style was based on repetitive rhythms and grooves, which he created with his band by using strict discipline and training. His music was often instrumental in nature, and he utilized a call-and-response technique between himself and the audience. Brown’s approach to funk was highly influential, and helped to shape the sound of the genre.

Parliament-Funkadelic, led by George Clinton, was another important early funk band. Their style was more experimental than that of James Brown, incorporating elements of psychedelic rock, soul, and R&B. Clinton’s vision for the band was ambitious, and their shows were known for their outrageous costumes, light shows, and stage prop

George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic

George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic were the undisputed kingpins of funk in the 1970s. Clinton, a former barber from Plainfield, N.J., formed Parliament in the late 1960s as an outgrowth of his doo-wop group, the Parliaments. The ever-evolving Parliament-Funkadelic collective – which at its height included more than 50 musicians – mixed acid rock, R&B, soul and Jimi Hendrix-style psychedelia with a rhythmic assault that was at once relentless and fluid. The result was a sonic assault that was as revolutionary as it was hedonistic; Clinton’s music wasn’t so much about making you move your feet as it was about expanding your mind.

Bootsy Collins

Funk is a music genre that originated in the mid-1960s when African American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B). Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground.

One of the earliest funk artists was James Brown, whose 1966 hit “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” helped to lay the groundwork for the genre. Brown’s bandleader, Bootsy Collins, was also an important early figure in funk; his signature style of playing established many of the genre’s conventions. Other important early funk artists include Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton (and his bands Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy’s Rubber Band), Fred Wesley (also of Parliament-Funkadelic), and Maceo Parker (of James Brown’s band).

Prince

Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 7, 1958. He was named after his father, John Nelson, a jazz pianist. Prince’s mother Mattie Shaw was a singer with the local sex club The Lily Pad. Prince’s parents divorced when he was young, and he and his sister, Tyka, were raised by their father.

Prince started playing the piano at age seven and picked up the guitar at age thirteen. He began writing songs at fourteen. When he was eighteen, Prince signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. His first album, For You (1978), did not sell well, but his second album, Prince (1979), which included the single “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” was a hit.

In 1980, Prince released the album Dirty Mind. The album’s sexually explicit lyrics caused controversy, but the album’s combination of R&B, pop, and new wave sounds was groundbreaking. Controversy (1981) followed Dirty Mind; it featured the sexually explicit song “Darling Nikki” and an unrated video for the title track that caused MTV to ban Prince from the network.

1982’s 1999 was another critical and commercial success for Prince; it included the singles “Little Red Corvette” and “Delirious.” Around this time, Prince began using the symbol as his stage name; it combined elements of both male and female gender symbols. In 1984, Prince starred in and wrote the soundtrack for Purple Rain, a film about an aspiring musician from Minneapolis. The soundtrack won an Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Rick James

Rick James was an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. His 1982 album Street Songs included the hit singles “Give It to Me Baby” and “Super Freak”, the latter of which became his signature song. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went platinum.
