The Plot

Joe Gardner ( Jamie Foxx) is a middle-school band teacher whose true passion is playing jazz. After impressing Détroit jazz pianist Dorothea Williams ( Angela Bassett) at a club one night, Gardner lands an accompanying gig for the famous musician at the Lincoln Center.

But just as he’s on the brink of success, Gardner has a devastating accident that separates his soul from his body and sends him on a journey to The Great Before — a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth.

Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with 22 ( Tina Fey), a young soul who is having an existential crisis. As Joe desperately tries to escape back to the land of the living, he and 22 must discover what it truly means to have a soul before it’s too late for both of them.

The Characters

The music in the film is performed by an ensemble of musicians and singers led by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. The movie features an original score, as well as covers of classic soul songs.

The Score

In an interview with Variety, Reznor said that he and Ross had wanted to work on a Pixar film for years, and that they had been “blown away” by the script for Soul.

Reznor and Ross’ score features a mix of electronic and organic instrumentation, including contributions from jazz musicians such as trumpeter Keyon Harrold and saxophonist Kamasi Washington.

The score was released as an album on December 11, 2020.

The Soundtrack
