The History of the World Folk Music Association

The World Folk Music Association (WFMA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization whose mission is to promote Traditional Folk, Celtic and World music and dance through education, performance and recorded presentation.

The roots of the WFMA go back to 1962 when a small group of traditional musicians from the Washington, D.C. area founded the Folklore Society of Greater Washington. The FSGW, as it came to be known, was dedicated to the study and performance of traditional music and dance from around the world. In 1976, the name was changed to the World Folk Music Association to reflect the growing interest in Celtic and World music.

Over the years, the WFMA has sponsored countless concerts, dances, workshops, festivals and educational programs featuring some of the finest traditional musicians from around the globe. The WFMA has also produced a number of critically acclaimed recordings of traditional music.
