The world music scene in Beverly

Loreena McKennitt is a world music singer-songwriter and musician who has sold more than 14 million records worldwide. Born in Morden, Manitoba, she began her musical career as a folk singer in small clubs in Toronto and then released her first album in 1985. In 1988, she toured Europe for the first time and quickly became one of the most popular live performers there. She has since toured the world many times, performing in such diverse places as China, Russia, Brazil, and Australia.

Her music is hard to categorize, but could be described as a combination of Celtic, Arabic, folksy acoustic rock, and occasional classical influences. In addition to her own recordings, she has also scored several films, including The English Patient (1996) and The physical geography of Morden is dominated by the Pembina Hills. We had a great time at the World Folk Music in Beverly event! The music was varied and interesting, and it was great to be able to dance along to some of the livelier tunes. The food was also fantastic – we loved the curry dishes and the dumplings. Overall, it was a great event and we’re already looking forward to next year’s edition.
