The History of Gospel Music

Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace.

Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Darcey explained that gospel music was “born out of struggle, hardship, and strife.” During slavery, slaves were not allowed to own drums or any type of instrument. As a result, they used their voices to create rhythm by clapping their hands and stomping their feet on the ground.

The first published use of the term “gospel song” probably appeared in 1874 when Philip Bliss released a songbook entitled Gospel Songs. A collection of “Spirituals”, this book contained most of the major works that would come to be considered gospel songs: hymns like “Amazing Grace”, “Nearer My God to Thee”, and “There Is a Green Hill Far Away”, as well as more modern pieces like Blankenship’s “The Old Rugged Cross” and Sankey’s “Just As I Am”.

With the advent of radio in the 1920s and television in the 1940s, gospel music became increasingly popular among mainstream audiences. Andover Newton Theological School professor Kristin Du Mez notes that during the Second Great Awakening in the 1830s and 1840s, white evangelicals increasingly began to appropriate black gospel music for use in their own worship services. This process continued into the 1950s and 1960s with figures such as Andraé Crouch and Mahalia Jackson helping to lead what Du Mez calls a “gospel renaissance” in which black gospel traditions were adopted by white evangelicals who were eager to find new modes of worship that would appeal to young people during the height of the Civil Rights movement.

The Different Types of Gospel Music

Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Gouvea’s “History of Singing” reports that this practice was common to Negroes as well as whites in early New England churches. Brown states that the practice was also common among religious orders in England during this period.” The effort yielded several reactions: some institutions tried to ban the sessions outright; others cut back on their number; and still others took no action at all. Despite the controversy, gospel session singing continued unabated throughout most of the 18th century in both white and black churches across America

The term “gospel song” most commonly refers to a musical composition that is almost always intended to give praise to God (per Google’s definition). This type of song is usually led by a solo artist or a small group singing either acappella or with light instrumentation such as piano or guitar
