Yanni’s musical training

Yanni was born in 1954 in Kalamata, Greece, the son of a bank executive and a homemaker. He began piano lessons at age four and displayed an unusual musical talent early in life. When he was eight years old, his parents took him to his first live music performance, by Greek composer Vangelis Papathanasiou.

As a youngster, Yanni was strongly influenced by Western rock artists such as the Moody Blues and Rick Wakeman of Yes. He also showed an interest in jazz fusion pioneers such as Miles Davis and Chic Corea. Yanni’s musical training began at age eleven when he started studying piano at the Royal Academy of Music in Athens. He later attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied psychology.

Yanni’s first band, Chameleon

Chameleon was Yanni’s first band. He formed it in 1977 with a group of his friends from college. The band became very popular in their hometown of Minneapolis, playing at a variety of clubs and venues. They released their first album, “Optimystique,” in 1978.

Yanni played keyboards in the band and also sang, but it was his skill as a composer and arranger that set him apart from the other members. He wrote all of the band’s original material, which incorporated a wide range of genres and styles, from rock to classical to jazz.

The group gained a following beyond Minneapolis, playing shows in other cities in the Midwest. They even scored a spot on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” television show. But ultimately, Chameleon never broke through to become a nationally-known act and they disbanded in 1979.

Yanni Chrysomallis, world-renowned Greek composer, keyboardist, and pianist, has enjoyed great success in his solo career. After releasing his first album in 1984, he has gone on to put out a total of 34 albums, many of which have topped the new age and world music charts. He Mixes elements of jazz and classical music to create his signature sound, which has earned him multiple Grammy nominations and a huge international following.

Yanni’s most popular album is perhaps Live at the Acropolis, which was recorded in Greece in 1995 in front of a massive crowd of over 4,000 people. The concert was later released as a video and DVD and became one of the best-selling music videos of all time. Yanni continues to tour regularly and perform to sold-out audiences all over the world.

Optimystique is the first album by Greek-American instrumentalist Yanni, released in 1984. The energetic follow-up single “Feeling Good” was used in a Pepsi-Cola commercial featuring football greats Joe Montana and Steve Young, which helped the song become a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Nostalgia”, another track from Dare to Dream, was also used extensively in a Pepsi commercial featuring supermodel Cindy Crawford.

Yanni’s world tours

If I Could Tell You was released in 2000 and was another commercial success, reaching platinum status.
